The King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center invites high school teachers to attend a teacher professional development workshop in Honolulu  on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 8:30AM to 3:30PM.

This four-module mini-course equips educators to bring culturally grounded civic learning into their classrooms, developed in direct alignment with Our Kaiāulu Votes and ea Hawaiʻi. Grounded in the ʻōlelo noʻeau “Ke kahua ma mua, ma hope ke kūkulu,” the course moves participants from foundation to practice: establishing the philosophical and cultural kahua, introducing the Five Rules for productive civic discussion, examining real community pilikia and case studies, and equipping educators with concrete classroom tools — including the Makawalu Method and the TWDR discussion protocol.

Educators leave with a practical framework for facilitating discussion on divisive issues, a set of ready-to-use classroom protocols, and a plan for applying the training in their own context. The course includes pre-work reflection prompts, slide decks, facilitator guides, and participant resources for asynchronous or facilitated use.

Reimbursement: Airfare and ground transportation reimbursement up to $225 for 8 neighbor island teachers.
