Hawaiʻi History Day Student Documentary Film Showcase
Saturday, September 12, 2026
10:30 AM to 12:30 PM (HST)
Aliʻiōlani Hale, Supreme Court Courtroom

On Saturday, September 12, we gathered at Aliʻiōlani Hale to watch six short documentary films produced by student filmmakers for Hawaiʻi History Day—a state-wide history and civic education program organized by Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities. Student-produced films explored topics including Queen’s Health Systems, Hansen’s disease (leprosy) in Hawaiʻi, the Kalima Lawsuit, sugar plantation labor, the introduction of the telephone to Hawaiʻi, and the enduring practice of lāʻau lapaʻau. Meleanna Meyer, Hawaiian filmmaker, artist, and educator, moderated a discussion with the student filmmakers, sharing their research and reflecting on the civic power of filmmaking.
