In observance of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea 2026, join us for a special film screening and panel discussion honoring this year’s recipients: Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana, George Helm, and Kimo Mitchell. The program will feature the 1977 documentary Kahoʻolawe Aloha ʻĀina – George Helm, produced by the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana. The film chronicles the final years of George Jarrett Helm Jr.’s life as he led efforts to end the U.S. military bombing of Kahoʻolawe, inspiring a generation to embrace the principle of aloha ʻāina—love and stewardship of the land.

Following the screening, a panel discussion will explore the historical significance of the Protect Kahoʻolawe movement, the enduring legacy of George Helm and Kimo Mitchell, and the perpetuation of aloha ʻāina today. Panelists include Davianna McGregor of Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana and C.M. Kaliko Baker of the Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge. The discussion will be moderated by Laura Kaakua of the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation.
